Mainstream NSC (CAPS) with Assistance and Remediation

Orion follows the National Senior Certificate (NSC) mainstream CAPS curriculum from Grade R to Grade 12.

Orion is an English medium school that offers all the required CAPS subjects up to Grade 9.
From Grade 10 to Grade 12, all learners must take English HL, Afrikaans (FAL), Maths/
Maths Literacy, Life Orientation (LO), Computer Aided Technology (CAT) and 2 optional
FET subjects.
At Orion College we offer 4 optional subject choices at FET level (Grade 10 – 12):
Business Studies, Consumer Studies, Tourism and Drama.

VOCATIONAL STREAM (VOC)

The VOC is a 1 to 3-year vocational programme designed to prepare and equip learners with the needs for a specific work environment. Each year is a separate qualification level.

Who is the Vocational Pathway for?

The VOC is for learners who have passed Grade 9 (NQF 1) but are not suited to
completing the 7-subject National Senior Certificate NSC

Who is the accrediting body for the Vocational courses?

These courses are accredited by the MICT Seta and the ETDP Seta after successful completion these courses, learners obtain a qualification issued by SAQA. The SETA landscape is changing in 2026.  The SETA-accredited courses will be replaced by QCTO-designed qualifications, which will include an external exam component, alongside coursework. Orion College will continue to offer Vocational Courses when this change is implemented. We will partner with accredited providers.

What can learners do after completing the VOC programme?
They may be able to continue their studies at NQF 5 level at a TVET college or they
may choose to enter the workplace.

The Technical Occupational Curriculum (TOC)

The TOC is a 4-year practical skills-based program designed to prepare and equip learners with the
needs for the work environment.

At Orion College we offer two skills subjects:
Hospitality Studies and Office Administration.

In addition to skills subjects, there is an academic component to
the TOC curriculum, which includes:
English HL, Afrikaans (FAL), Maths, Personal & Social Wellbeing,
Physical Education, Creative Arts and Natural Science.
